Statement on Guinea’s Presidential Election

The United States notes the Guinean Independent National Electoral Commission’s announcement of the provisional results of the October 18 presidential election. We express concern about the questions raised by election observers and civil society on the lack of transparency in vote tabulation and inconsistencies between the announced results and tally sheet (PV) results from polling stations. We urge all parties to resolve electoral disputes peacefully through established, non-partisan institutions and inclusive dialogue.

The United States condemns the violence and reported human rights violations surrounding the October 18 election. We urge authorities to immediately investigate the allegations of excessive use of force by security forces and ensure justice for the victims of violence and accountability for those responsible. We express our condolences to the families of the victims and wish a full recovery to those injured.

We reiterate our support for the diplomatic efforts of ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations. We urge all Guinean leaders and citizens to work together to strengthen the country’s democracy and to protect fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
