Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstration and general strike planned for September 20th and 21st in Conakry

The U.S. Embassy has received reports that a political demonstration is expected to occur in Conakry on Wednesday, September 20.  The demonstration is currently expected to take place along Route le Prince, from Cosa, through the Bambeto traffic circle and on to Stade 28 Septembre, but the route is subject to change at any time.

Additionally, a “ville morte,” or general strike, has been declared for Thursday September 21st.  Businesses and services may be reduced or closed.  While intended to be peaceful, it is possible those who continue to conduct business and move about the city may be perceived as not honoring the strike and be targeted for retaliation.

Those with American Citizens Services appointments at the Embassy on Thursday, September 21st who are unable to come to their scheduled appointment will have their appointments honored Friday, September 21st between 8 and 11am.  No additional confirmation or contact is required to reschedule.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations. Vehicles attempting to pass through areas where protests occur are frequently targeted by people throwing rocks.
