Demonstration Alert: U.S. Embassy Conakry, Guinea (July 9, 2018)

Location: City of Conakry

Event: Demonstrations in Conakry are scheduled to continue through at least Wednesday, July11, 2018, with major activity beginning on Tuesday, July 12.  Traffic patterns have been seriously impacted throughout the city, and incidents of rock throwing and tire burning, as well as scattered gunshots, have been reported.  Many businesses have closed and taxi service is sparse. Civil unrest and demonstrations are taking place at unpredictable locations around the city. Embassy personnel have been instructed to cancel any non-essential travel in or around Conakry until the situation can be reassessed on Thursday, July 12, 2018.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid the areas of the demonstrations.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  • Monitor local media for updates
  • Keep a low profile.
